4CAT
“4CAT is a research tool that can be used to analyse and process data from online social platforms. Its goal is to make the capture and analysis of data from these platforms accessible to people through a web interface, without requiring any programming or web scraping skills. Our target audience is researchers, students and journalists interested using Digital Methods in their work.” (https://github.com/digitalmethodsinitiative/4cat

The most well-known platform supported by 4CAT is probably Telegram. The following platforms are supported through other tools, with which you can collect data to import data into 4CAT for analysis:

  • Instagram, TikTok, 9gag, Imgur, LinkedIn, Parler, Douyin and Twitter (via Zeeschuimer)
  • Facebook and Instagram (via CrowdTangle exports)

We currently have two 4CAT servers up and running:

Track Twitter-users and save their tweets. Tweets are saved in real time. Please contact us to set up a harvest. To set up a harvest, we need the user ID’s you want to track as a commaseparated string (for instance: 15698, 15678845, 121245454 etc.). Please use a converter to convert handles to ID’s.  If you need to convert many users often, you might consider installing a Python-environment on your own device to run a script that does the conversion in bulk. You can’t set up new searches yourself, however you can access saved searches using these credentials: [username: tcat] [password: eaLso3uf85wAnoxdszrKQuFPeTG73K22XnKAQHCEE]. You need to be on RUC campus or log on to RUC VPN to access service. Analysis generates various files that typically can be analysed using visualization tools. Please reference our external resources for hints on visualization.
